NEW WEB RESOURCE FOR PROFESSIONAL WORKING TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN - Launching National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Oct,
2001, the new End Violence Against Women Web site from Johns Hopkins
University provides policymakers, researchers, health communication
specialists and others with the latest information from hundreds of
organizations.

LAWYERS CAN HELP - ABA's Division for Public Education and the
Commission on Domestic Violence has assembled information for state
and local bars, governors, attorneys general and the public at large,
on the needs of victims and how to assist.

CENSUS REPORT ON THE UNINSURED - The Census Bureau reports the number
of uninsured Americans in 2000 dropped for the second year in a row,
decreasing from 39.3 million in 1999 to 38.7 million in 2000. Young
adults were the most likely to lack insurance.

THE BAD NEWS IS - Most analysts do not expect the downward trend in
the number of uninsured to continue, particularly with a weakened
economy, the growing number of unemployed workers and increasing
costs of health care. Many states also are facing Medicaid budget
shortfalls, and some have considered "trimming" their programs.
Families USA's analysis of the 2000 insurance figures finds that the
decrease of 600,000 in the overall number of uninsured Americans is
largely attributable to the efficacy of the 1997 State Children's
Health Insurance Program. The bad news is that the number of
uninsured Americans in 2001 is probably well above 40 million -- and
likely to grow in the period ahead.

NATIONAL CHILD HEATH DAY - On Oct 1 the Maternal and Child Health
Bureau launched a ten-year action plan to help focus and improve
community-based services for children with special health care needs
and their families. An action Kit is available online.

CHILDREN IN THE STATES 2001 - Which states are doing the most, and
least, for children? Children's Defense Fund's state profiles are
tools for planning and action - particularly useful as state and
local governments, as well as the private sector, take on increasing
levels of responsibility for the design and implementation of
programs affecting children.
