It started out with good intent almost three years ago by a student at Brandeis University. Because it is a variation on a chain letter, it swamped the University's e-mail system and they canceled the student's account. The address included on the petition -- sarabande@brandeis.edu -- does not exist. I'm sure through the past three years, hundreds of people have signed this, only to have it go nowhere. It is junk mail that keeps circulating on the Internet. While the petition is bogus, the information in it is correct. Women and families in Afghanistan have suffered beyond belief under the Taliban rule. For folks who want to help, there are websites with suggestions for ways to get involved.
