MEDIA ADVISORY--September 12, 2001 AMERICA'S PUBLIC SCHOOLS KEY TO STABILITY IN TIMES OF CRISIS IN WAKE OF RECENT TERRORIST ATTACKS, NATIONAL SCHOOL REFORM LEADERS PRAISE
SCHOOLS AND ASK FOR A CONTINUED FOCUS ON SCHOOL REFORM.
WASHINGTON, DC--The forces of hatred and intolerance have dealt an
extraordinary blow against freedom using terror as a weapon. The Public
Education Network (PEN) joins the chorus of voices in condemning yesterday's
attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. PEN expresses its
confidence that the American people and its public institutions, such as
public schools, will show their strength, unity, and resilience in the face
of this tragedy.
PEN wishes to praise and acknowledge America's school leaders and teachers
who were able to keep schools open, provide counsel and comfort to students,
and maintain a safe and structured learning environment during a time of
great fear and confusion. The many highly trained professionals in our
nation's public schools deserve both our gratitude and our praise.
PEN believes that access to a high-quality public education is the bedrock
of our democracy. Public schools are the institutions in most communities
where common values are expressed, shared, and taught. Strong public
schools--with safe and modern facilities, qualified teachers, adequate
resources, high standards and accountability measures, and strong links to
the communities they serve--are an important line of defense against
ignorance, hatred, and intolerance.
In the coming weeks, as important calls for rethinking our commitment to our
national defense and the war against terrorism are made, the Public
Education Network asks policymakers and citizens to remember the important
role that public education plays in preserving, protecting, and defending
our shared democratic values. It is PEN's hope that open public dialogue
about our national readiness and preparedness to respond to threats against
our freedom will amplify efforts already underway to increase the quality of
America's public schools.
The Public Education Network is a national association of local education
funds, community-based school reform organizations, working to create
high-quality public schools for all children, particularly poor and minority
students. PEN works to educate the nation about the relationship between
school quality and the quality of community and public life. For more
