Subject: [NIFL-FAMILY:516] RE: What is curriculum?
Hi all! I would like to take the opportunity to build upon the questions
that Meta Potts asked posed last Tuesday:
What does curriculum mean to all of you who are asking for copies of
materials?
It means to me, an outline of State and Federal and program
requirements and framework to which all activities link such as EFF(this
should include ways that family and personal goals can be
intertwined.)
Does it come in a box with instructions on how to move from one
step to the next?
No. I have tried these one step at a time, sequential programs and
have found that for me they most often do not fit student or family
goals, the sequence does not match the emergent needs, and the
reading levels are too difficult. They do work as a resource.
Does it have one piece or several pieces that fit
together?
Integration is the key. How do the component link, communicate and
strengthen each other.
Does it claim to meet universal needs, or does it show you ways
that you (as the skilled facilitator) can meet the distinct needs of your
students?
Ideas, ideas, ideas and they should tie to the evaluation process
for the families and program.
Your answers to these questions are of particular significance to NCFL! We
are currently in a needs assessment process which will identify the types of
materials that are most needed by... YOU! This process will also drive the
production of materials that will become a part of our training network. If
each of you would take a moment to answer the above questions, and send them
to me at jlee@famlit.org - I will assure you that your voices will be added
to our needs assessment!
I will also glean information from the provocative list serve discussions
that these questions are sure to spawn!
Thanks very much!
