I am very drawn to EFF (Equipped for the Future) because instead of being a curriculum it is a framework. The framework helps students articulate (to you and to themselves) what they want/need to know and be able to do, and then provides direction in how to frame the teaching. In our Even Start program we have always used a variety of materials and "curriculum" to design curriculum to meet students needs and interests, but until we found the EFF framework we were lacking structure. If you don't use a canned curriculum (which I agree with others who have expressed opinions here that these should be used a resources, not as a whole curriculum) you need to have some kind of framework so that you can clearly articulate what is going on. Only after you articulate what you are doing can you integrate components and assess student progress. We have found EFF gives us the freedom to design programming for our students, but the structure we need to work within. Plus there is nothing to buy!
