I am the new VP for Field and External Services at National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL. I have been following the tremendous interaction on the topic of curriculum. As we contemplate new and better ways to enhance family literacy, to impact on child learning outcomes, your comments and input will be greatly appreciated. With the initiative from Washington on scientific based reading and the need to support educational ideas with research, we need to have a rich interaction from all practitioners. We will need to look at and utilize a variety of curricula, instructional approaches and evaluative research models to best promote student learning and improved standards for all of the families struggling to create a better world and future for themselves. Please know that NCFL will continue to move forward to produce and deliver the best possible product to you, our customer. Your ideas and input will be of major significance in that endeavor. -----Original Message----- From: nifl-family@nifl.gov [mailto:nifl-family@nifl.gov]On Behalf Of Jon Lee Sent: Friday, December 14, 2001 7:36 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-FAMILY:520] RE: Curriculum responses All I can say is WOW! Already ten responses with some very serious implications that we need to consider: Is a curriculum of any sort too limiting, and too limited? Are there other words that we could use; outcomes of teaching and learning; framework; curriculum guide; outline. (We may need our more scholarly members to provide some definitions to help us on our way with this question.) Sequential, step by step programs do not seem to fit the bill (I could not agree more!) Rather, ideas, the importance of integration, offers alternatives or extended learning activities, or a package that contains a student workbook, a teacher lesson plan book and a best practices journal with user's comments and additions? (Thanks to: Susanna Scott Suchak), materials/guides on integrating Adult Ed topics into the PACT time (Jan Delay) seem to fit the bill a little better. By the way these are your words! Please keep your insights and knowledge coming! Jon
