If you go to http://gseweb.harvard.edu/~ncsall/ ,which is the National Center for the Study of Adult Education and Learning, based at Harvard's graduate school of education, you can access past copies of the excellent publication Focus on Basics. Search the back issues for Volume 2, Issue A, March 1998 where you will find "The First Three Weeks: A Critical Time for Motivation" by B. Allan Quigley. It will give you valuable, research-based information on retention. The rest of that publication has articles of interest for retention as well. I highly recommend a subscription.
