Statistics, statistics, statistics...

America's Children 2002
In 2000, there were 70.4 million children and youth living in the United
States, according to the latest America's Children federal report, compiled
by the Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics. Trends in
health and behavioral/social indicators for teens continued to improve. In
2000 the child poverty rate had decreased to 16 percent from its 1993 high
of 22 percent. Racial and ethnic diversity among the young has continued to
increase, with Hispanic children becoming the largest minority in 2000. The
percentage of children living with at last one foreign-born parent increased
from 15 percent in 1994 to 19 percent of children by 2001.

Education Secretary Rod Paige issued a definitive statement that the new
choice requirements in the "No Child Left Behind" Act of 2001 must be
implemented beginning this fall. According to Education Week, however,
questions remain -- department officials could not say whether this mandate
overrides state laws limiting class size, for example.
