We were told in a training that some programs work with the courts, and parents (usually women) who have commited certain crimes are given the option of attending adult education or Family Literacy programs to fulfill a portion or all of their community service hours. We briefly discussed this with our local judge, and she responded positively to the idea. She told us that sometimes women are given many hours of community service, but because they are pregnant or have small children, it is difficult to serve time out on the road crew. This option would have a positive influence on the whole family. If you have tried this type of program or have any resources on this subject, please write us, or send a comment to the list.
