This spending bill recommends level funding for Even Start at $250 million. This is good news for all family literacy advocates who have been writing and calling Congress urging Members to oppose President Bush's proposed $50 million cut. However, our work is not finished. The House proposal must still be reconciled with Senate action yet to be completed and then approved by the full Congress. Congressional leaders are intent on wrapping up Fiscal Year 2003 appropriations decisions before President Bush's January 28th State of the Union Address. Currently all programs under the Department of Education are being funded at Fiscal Year 2002 levels by a stop gap measure that expires on January 31. It is important that family literacy supporters continue to contact Members of Congress to urge their support for not cutting funding for the Even Start Family Literacy Program.
