Hi Cheryl (and all), In 1999, Literacy Volunteers of America (now ProLiteracy America) commissioned a study to find out what was the economic impact of the money their local adult literacy programs spent on tutoring adults. The study was conducted by A.T. Kearney, one of the world's leading management consulting firms. The Kearney study concluded that $33 in economic benefit is returned to the overall economy for every $1 invested in providing LVA services. Please note that this study was conducted with one specific national literacy program, Literacy Volunteers of America (LVA), and the conclusions found in the study may or may not hold true for other adult literacy programs. (One would suppose that LVA's uniform standards for its local programs and the quality of its tutor training would have created some of the ability for its students to have success. One could also suppose that other well-designed literacy programs might produce similar results.) As far as I am aware, this has been the only study conducted to determine the actual economic benefit that a community gains by having an adult literacy program. A press release about the study can be found at: http://www.literacyvolunteers.org/home/press/nov499kearney.html Note that Literacy Volunteers of America is now ProLiteracy America and their phone number has changed since the 1999 press release. Their phone number is (315) 422-9121. Good success to you in your quest for data, Chloe Fessler Montana Family Literacy Initiative ChloeMizoo@aol.com
