If they have other issues, perhaps it can be approached in a way where it will help them get their ED. If one signs up for a Family Lit course, then one should know it is to help the family learn and has a PACT competent. If one has other issues, perhaps it can be approached through a Family Lit way. I like Sylvan's response. It does take time to get parents to relate to their children. It also takes a good school teacher to arrange this. Parents need to know what is expected of them and go in the class or other structured situation and do what is expected. If a teacher is just going to expect parents to sit and talk, they will. In my family literacy for men, I have seen them have such a good time practicing with materials that they will use for their children, because, as Sylvan says, they never had a chance to do this before. Another thing I have observed is that parents will practice with elaborate things. Example: paper mache puppets that young children can break very easily. Whereas paper bag puppets can be made easily and quickly by even 2 year olds.
