For the recent Dateline expose that aired August 8 and New York Times series on high school push-outs, we spent many hours with the journalists producing the stories to provide background information that would portray our students realistically and respectfully, recognizing their strides against against seemingly insurmountable barriers as they progress towards self sufficiency. For our annual report and soon to be released public awareness campaigns, we deliberately chose very positive images accompanied by true stories of great efforts that produce modest but steady gains. While we respect the choices others make, we feel strongly that it is preferable to use the power what inspired you to come into the field of adult literacy education as you look for themes in your public awareness efforts. Adult education is receiving unprecedented media attention in this region of the country. We want to continue to build on this momentum. I call upon us as a group to work together to put forward positive, productive images that reflect the real character of our students.
