Dear Colleagues,
One of the highlights of my professional career is the family literacy
conference and working with the student speakers.
It is time to nominate these next generation of student speakers! As
always, we would like to highlight 4 of your best! Please review the
criteria below and send your nominations directly to me at
bfreeman@famlit.org, be sure to include student speaker in your subject
line. If you choose to mail your nomination send it to the address below.

As you consider the nomination, think of an adult student's strengths, their
comfort level speaking in front of groups and their compelling stories. We
would like to demonstrate the diversity of family literacy programming
across this country, so include grandparents, fathers and of course mothers.
In addition, we must include programming from the various regions of the
country and the populations represented in those regions.

Student speakers for the conference (March 1 - 3, 2004) must have:
1. Attended a four-component family literacy program and completed 1 or
more years in that program.
2. Accomplished goals in the following areas: family, vocational or
employment, personal, and academic
3. Experience speaking in front of groups of more than 50 people, such as
their own class, local groups or state family literacy conferences

In addition, the student must demonstrate that he/she is fluent in English
and will be supported by the staff of their family literacy program.

The student must be willing to travel to Orlando; arrive on the Sunday
before the conference; and be available for an on-site practice session
Monday prior to the Opening Session.

We are particularly interested in students who have developed strategies for
supporting their children's academic development, and have developed
supportive strategies to include their extended families.

Programs that want to nominate students must demonstrate that they:
align themselves with the federal definition for family literacy
services
have been funded as a four component family literacy program for three
years and
must have staff who will support the student as they write and perfect
their speeches.
The deadline for the nomination is Oct. 17, 2003 5:30 pm (EST).

I look forward to reviewing the student nominations and meeting the
subsequent winners. We will provide for the winners' conference
registration, travel, hotel and food expenses. We will announce the final
choices on Nov. 3rd.

As always,
With families in mind

Bonnie
