Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year 2004 Nominations!
The National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) and Toyota are pleased to
announce the nomination process for the 2004 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher
of the Year award.
The Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year award was established to
honor excellence in family education. Awards are given to educators who
demonstrate exemplary efforts to help parents and children achieve their
academic and non-academic goals.
Nomination Process
Nominations will be accepted beginning June 1, 2003, through October 1,
2003. Nominations must be received at the NCFL office on or before October
1, 2003.
The nominated teacher must work in a four-component family literacy program
that includes: children's education, adult education, Parent Time and Parent
and Child Together (PACT) Time.
A typed narrative addressing all of the guidelines outlined should be
submitted by the Program Director or Coordinator . Nominations must be
accompanied by a brief adult student essay that addresses how the nominated
teacher has impacted the student's life, the lives of the student's family
members, and others in the program. Only one teacher per program may be
nominated.
Six (6) copies of the nomination must be submitted to NCFL. Incomplete
entries will not be considered.
Do not submit additional materials such as videos, photos or portfolios.
These materials will not be considered as part of the entry, and will not be
returned if they are submitted.
All nominations must include the following information:
. Nominated Teacher's Name
. Name of Program Director/Coordinator and
. Program Name and Address Contact Information
. Name of Adult Student Essay Writer
. Program Phone Number and FAX
If selected as a finalist, the nominated teacher and/or Program Director may
be interviewed by phone during the final selection process.
Nominations must be submitted to NCFL on or before October 1, 2003. Faxed
submissions will not be accepted:

Awards
The 2004 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000
award for his/her program, courtesy of Toyota. He/she will also receive a
trip to the 13th Annual National Conference on Family Literacy at Disney's
Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Florida, March 2004, where he/she will
be recognized as the "Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year."
Scholarships will also be awarded to several finalists, along with a variety
of recognition items.
Nomination Guidelines
(Please address each of the following points in the nomination narrative.)
Briefly describe the family literacy program. How long has it been in
operation? How many families attended during program year 2002-2003? How are
student outcomes measured, and what percentage of students (adults and
children) met anticipated outcomes for the program year? How is the program
funded (e.g., Head Start, Even Start, private funding, collaborating
agencies)? What is the retention rate for the program?
What is the nominee's teaching assignment in the family literacy program?
What is her/his education? How many years has she/he taught in a
four-component family literacy program? What professional development has
the nominee undertaken to better meet the needs of students?
Describe the four components of the program and the nominee's role in each
component.
Describe how the program adapts to meet the needs of specific populations
(e.g., working parents, English Language Learners, families with infants and
toddlers). What is the nominee's role in addressing the goals of these
groups?
Describe how the nominee demonstrates skills and knowledge in these areas:
curriculum development,retention of students, special initiatives, teamwork,
collaboration with family literacy partners.
Cite at least one example of how the nominee has impacted families in the
community.
Describe the special qualities the nominee possesses and what exceptional
work she/he has done to qualify for the 2004 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher
of the Year award.
Adult Student Essay. An adult student who is very familiar with the
nominated teacher should describe in detail how the teacher has impacted the
student and his/her family. The essay (no more than 1 page) should be
written by the student. Enclose the original essay. Please also provide an
English translation if applicable.
