Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Commemorate the contributions of 40 million Hispanics in the United States
during National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15. This
observance celebrates the cultural, linguistic, and racial diversity of the
Latino community in our Nation with events ranging from parades to business
conferences. Learn about this special observance and see how some groups are
celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

Get to know our September guest, Amelia Vega, Miss Universe 2003. Young
Latinas can also find tips on making new friends, learn about fun things to
do in our Nation's capitol, and check out fun ways to keep the creative
juices flowing! http://www.soyunica.gov/new/default.aspx

For Latinas, by Latinas!: Reporteritas Update
Our Reporteritas write articles for www.soyunica.gov based on their
experiences as young Latinas living in the United States. Reporteritas write
about "real" experiences that young Latinas face, from breaking up with a
boyfriend to deciding whether or not to get a tattoo. Coming soon to ĄSoy
Unica! ĄSoy Latina!, read an inside account by Reporterita Alyssa Hernandez
about her experiences at Junior ROTC camp. Do you know a young Latina who
likes to write? Start thinking about who you will recommend to be a 2004
Reporterita! Recruiting starts later this fall.

Just a reminder that the 2004 National Conference on Family Literacy "Call
for Conference Proposals" form is now available on NCFL's Web site at
www.famlit.org/conference.cfm. Maybe you've always wanted to share
information about your program's successful processes, you've developed an
innovative strategy for recruitment and retention, or you've organized great
community partnerships and collaborations, or... Then share your ideas with
conference attendees at the 2004 National Conference on Family Literacy in
Orlando on March 1-3.
