Good News for Family Literacy!

It is official... Congress has approved level funding for Even Start
($248.375 million) for fiscal year 2004.

Yesterday, by a vote of 65-28, the Senate approved the fiscal year 2004
Omnibus Appropriations Conference Report. The same conference report was
approved by the House of Representatives on December 8, 2003. The measure
now awaits the President's signature.

Family literacy advocates should be commended for their work in educating
lawmakers about the importance of family literacy. As you recall, both the
Administration and Senate had proposed to cut Even Start to $175 million in
FY 2004. Thanks to the hard work of family literacy supporters across the
nation, Congress agreed to not cut Even Start funding.

Other important FY 2004 funding levels:
Adult Education State Grants: $577,781,000 Adult Education National
Leadership Activities: $9,223,000
NIFL: $6,732,000
Head Start: $6,815,570,000

Now the fiscal year 2005 appropriations process will begin. Next month the
President will release his FY 2005 budget request. I'll be sure to let
everyone know what is requested for Even Start as soon as we hear.

Keep up the great work!
