Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher announced the appointment of Freeman and three other individuals on January 30. Bonnie and the other appointees replace those whose terms expire in April. The board has authority over the hiring of Kentucky's education commissioner and the actions of the state Department of Education. Freeman will maintain her position as Director of Special Projects at the National Center for Family Literacy as she begins her term in April. Freeman joined NCFL in 1989 from the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, where she was a Senior Consultant and one of the original teacher trainers for the PACE and Kenan Family Literacy Projects. At the National Center for Family Literacy, her work continues to evolve. Freeman's most recent work includes training family literacy educators and developing the Bank One Building Readers project for child care centers and family day care home providers. Congratulations, Bonnie! You deserve this distinct honor in recognition of your contributions and commitment to the education of children and adults.
