Understanding What Children Say
This British review of the research finds that children living with domestic
violence, or whose parents have severe health problems, including drug and
alcohol misuse, often say they want age-appropriate information to help them
understand what is going on in their family. Most of the time, however, they
keep quiet and rarely seek professional help. Their fear of violence, not
surprisingly, is made worse by the unpredictability of their parents' moods.

Get Ready to Read! Tool Reaching More States
Hasbro Children's Foundation awarded a grant to help the National Center for
Learning Disabilities (NCLD) expand its Get Ready to Read! early literacy
screening and training initiative to Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, and
to launch two new sites in New York. The program's centerpiece is a
research-based, easy-to-use, 20-item Screening Tool designed to gauge a
preschool child's progress in acquiring early literacy skills.
