Does anyone else have a new article or Web resource of relevance to family literacy that you'd like to share? I have an important message from the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy for those of you in Maryland: The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy is proud to announce its first annual Maryland Grant Competition. For 14 years, the Barbara Bush Foundation has helped non-profit and public organizations around the U.S. expand the literacy horizons of parents and their children. Using the funds that are raised at the annual Maryland Celebration of Reading, which will take place on March 18, 2005, the Foundation will make available a total of $500,000, to organizations seeking to promote family literacy in the state of Maryland. Each organization is eligible to receive a total award of up to $50,000, to be used to develop or expand a family literacy program in the state of Maryland. The Maryland grant application is now available online at www.marylandfamilyliteracyinitiative.org. Any public or non-profit organization that has been in existence for at least two years and has implemented a literacy program designed to help, adults, young children ages pre-K to third grade, or both, is eligible to apply. Applications for the Maryland Grant Competition are due to be submitted online, no later than 11:59 pm, October 1, 2004. Family Literacy Colleagues, Something else to think about in the world of language development: What Do Babies Think Before They Start Talking? Babies as young as 5 months old make distinctions about categories that their parents do not, revealing new information about how language develops in humans. The research by Sue Hespos, assistant professor of psychology and human development at Vanderbilt, and Elizabeth Spelke, professor of psychology at Harvard University, was published in the July 22 issue of Nature in the article " Conceptual Precursors to Language."
