Reading Specialist: Responsibilities include development of content in scientifically based reading research (SBRR) for the provision of professional development and technical assistance to low-performing elementary schools in meeting the needs of effective reading instruction; providing leadership in working with national reading experts, technical assistance specialists, State Education Agencies (SEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs) to deliver training and technical assistance in the implementation of evidence-based reading instruction, data assessment, and progress monitoring that meets the needs of teachers and students in K-3rd grade; conducting limited on-site technical assistance to schools and classroom teachers in effective reading strategies and student assessment, and; collaborating with other team members in project planning, implementation and evaluation. Qualifications for this position require a Bachelor's Degree and with a background in reading instruction or related area, Master's Degree preferred, and a minimum of five year's experience in direct classroom teaching in a primary setting, supervision of instruction and/or coaching experience in beginning reading, and organization and delivery of professional development. This position requires demonstrated knowledge of SBRR with application to reading programs in K-3 classrooms, knowledge of teaching methodology and adult education practices for developing and implementing training and technical assistance, experience and knowledge of school structure and programs including school change and reform models, ability to provide leadership with an outcomes/results orientation, excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing, effective interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with others and to invite their cooperative and collaborative support, and ability to work with members of a team. This position requires some travel, ability to deal with ambiguity and fast-paced change, and work with personnel in challenging school environments in the improvement of reading instruction.
