Our home visitor explains the program and what will be expected of the student- participation in parenting, adult ed, early childhood, and PACT (parent and child together time). If the family still seems interested, then a second visit is made- this is a chance to gather the necessary paper work for entry. The home visitor has an opportunity to discuss barriers the family might be facing. The third home visit is to finalize paper work, discuss bus pick up, fill out lunch forms, etc. If possible, I like to attend that third home visit so the mom will know two people before she arrives at the center. If a family has trouble keeping these three home visits, chances are there will be difficulties with attendance later. According to our grant, families must have 75% attendance so we want to be sure that the family is a good fit for us. Since we have a long waiting list, it isn't fair to keep slots open for families that are not ready. If a family can't keep the three visits, we just put them back on the waiting list until they feel they want to try again. We are an Even Start going only into our 2nd year and our Family Outreach worker is doing all that intake paperwork on the first visit.
