We just had a Family Reading Night at one of our schools and it was in conjunction with the Fall Book Fair held in the library. This was a school wide event and we had over 100 families attending. We had an agenda and flyer that was sent home telling about the event. We also took pre-registration with a statement that your family may still attend if you do not get the registration returned. This gave us an idea of how much to prepare for refreshments and events. We had three stations: a guest reader, bookwalk and book bingo. Each family traveled together to the stations and every child received a free book for attending. A publication from "No Child Left Behind: How to Help Your Child Succeed in School" was given to each parent. Partners are important for planning and use of resources. Our team was the school, their PTA organization, their Family Resource Center and the ACE2 Family Education program. Publicity works well too, the local paper came to take pictures and do an article for us. The Literacy Council in the school has decided to have at least one family fun night each 9 weeks this year. Our family literacy program partners with 9 elementary schools in the county with school family events. Another thing that will help is for the classroom teachers to be on-board and promote the nights event. Remind them or have someone on staff talk to each classroom and get the children excited about coming, if the children ask the parents, they will usually attend. Coming for one well-planned great family night event will be the calling card to attend the next and next! Good Luck to you and your program.
