Yes, I agree with John, that this is a very creative way to increase sponsorship in your program and also use VISTA funds. It reminded me of a program I read about awhile ago called Project WILL, which had their family literacy program located on a university campus to help promote academic approaches for the women participants and to continue with their education, if I remember correctly (see, McIvor, in Family Literacy in Action, New Readers Press, 1990). I was also wondering if you had any examples, of the ways these staff/VISTA members are modeling persistence for the students that other staff do not do, as "intermediate-type" sponsors. Do they offer emotional encouragement, discuss barriers and supports, advocate, design/participate in orientations for students, intakes, retention techniques, in ways that are different? You mentioned something about "not taken in by the excuses the students made for missing school?"
