A VISTA, who recently achieved her GED, can help someone who is scared to tackle algebra because a year ago she had the same issue. If a mom fails to attend the program because "my baby has a cold and it's too cold to bring him out," the VISTA might suspect that the mom doesn't have enough warm clothing and can quietly drop off a donated winter coat for the baby--and one for the mom. If you've never been in that position, it may not occur to you to think beyond the face saving excuse.
