As part of our work for the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning
and Literacy, Rutgers University is a partner in the National Labsite for
Adult Learning and Literacy. Some of our past and current research work
indicates that individualized group instruction is the predominate form of
instruction in ABE classes. For this reason, we want to find out as much
about individualized group instruction as we can. Specifically, we want to
understand how individualized group instruction developed in adult literacy
and what the experience of literacy professionals' has been with it. We are
defining individualized group instruction as follows:

Individualized Instruction is conducted in ABE or GED classes where students
who are supported by teachers meet regularly to work independently on
assignments. The process typically begins with tested diagnosis designed to
determine skill level in reading, writing and math. With the help of
teachers, learners progress through skill levels as defined and measured by
the increasing difficulty of the materials.

If you were a policy maker, program administrator or teacher at the time
when individualized group instruction was adopted as an instructional
system, or if you have had substantial experience with individualized group
instruction, would you share your experience with us during a phone
conversation that will last no longer than 1/2 hour? If the answer is yes,
please reply to this message or email Christine Bradley-Rodriguez at
bradleyc@eden.rutgers.edu and we will contact you.

Many thanks,
