In 1997, Sheila Parker wrote a dissertation that examined student
passage from math anxiety to confidence and determined that this was a
transitional experience.  Anyone planning to design a transition program
could benefit from reading it.  The title is Overcoming Math Anxiety:
Formerly Math Anxious Adults Share Their Solutions, UMI 9807079.
