Alice,
It is now more than a month from your communication...amazing. I too would
like to correspond and share ideas with teachers. I recently posted a query
to the technology arm of the list. It read the following:

In the hopes of not reinventing the wheel: Has anyone created or come
across an Access based or other mini-database program that allows for a
digital sign-in sheet that would drop to another screen to activate those
enrolled students present for the day and the cycles of action that each
student has to yet complete? Adult Ed is unique in its' problem of
administering a daily program with no stable attendance. This type of mini
program could be very helpful to all. This type of template would help Adult
Ed teachers to better serve their migrating population of students.

Is this something that you could use to track what each student needs as
they flow in and out of your program on a daily basis?
What curriculum do you have? We have customized Plato ( a server based
computerized curriculum) to serve levels E-A. It correlated to the TABE and
SAMS
What assessment and tests do you use. We use TABE and SAMS (Skills
Assessment Modules) I have incorporated the SAMS into our computer
curriculum to create a deeper bank of test questions and therefore hopefully
a truer feedback system to our teaches.
What problems and projects are you working on that I might give some
feedback on. I have been trying to use a program called Hot Potatoes that
can automatically grade tests. Teachers spend so much time on admin and
paperwork that self grading tests seem to be an easy answer.

I hope we can continue this correspondence,

Nixon,

Yes, I am one of the active adult ed. teachers on this list. I guess
that I would be considered as one of the "lurkers" who belong to the
list, read the information but rarely have the time to respond.

I work full time preparing students for the GED and am the site manager
for our center. In our parish (Louisiana) we have only 2 daytime
centers, 2 night centers and one corrections program We also prepare
those who already have a diploma for testing, including our own school
systems' substitute teacher preparation.

Over the past 13 years since I started this job there have been times
when my co-workers and I have felt isolated; however, our administrators
have always encouraged participation in state and regional professional
development. We always attend our state-wide adult ed. conference and
have made presentations at such conferences. Another great way to stay
in touch is through the "study circle" concept. I participated in one
last spring and felt that we truly shared our successes and had an
opportunity to discuss recent trends and research.

I see our biggest challenge as the National Reporting System. It is
great for accountability; however, most programs that are part-time have
difficulty w/ the time it now takes to measure that accountability.
Then, of course, our NRS data is directly tied to our funding. Do you
find this to be the same in FL?

Look forward to corresponding and sharing more ideas.
