How many times have you heard or said that yourself lately in reference to instruction? If you are teaching adults learning to speak English, you are in luck: There is research on how people learn second languages. In fact, there's a whole body of research on Second Language Acquisition (SLA)--the study of how people learn to communicate in a language other than their native language. NCLE's new online resource collection Second Language Acquisition provides background information about SLA. The collection, compiled by NCLE research associate Donna Moss, highlights NCLE and ERIC resources as well as pertinent organizations, periodicals, and policy issues. Of particular interest is the annotated bibliography of SLA research on learner motivation, interaction, and vocabulary development. Click on this collection at http://www.cal.org/ncle/ResSLA.htm to give yourself a background in this important topic. Upcoming Then, next week, when another NCLE publication on SLA -- Donna Moss's Q & A on Second Language Acquisition-- is on line, you will be able to further your knowledge of how motivation, interaction, and vocabulary development affect the language development of adults learning English. You will also get suggestions for classroom activities to facilitate English language skills development in adult learners.
