Job Description
Interim Director

The National Coalition for Literacy is a new nonprofit organization with a
mission to widely serve the interests of its members and provide various
forms of leadership to the adult literacy field.  The NCL is seeking a
part-time Interim Director to take charge of fundraising and management and
development assignments vital to the successful start-up of the
organization.

Responsibilities:  The Interim Director, to be based in Washington, D.C.,
will report to the NCL President and other members of the Coalition
Executive Committee.  She/he will:

*	have responsibility for fundraising and will work with the Treasurer
on fund development, budgeting, and financial reporting matters;
*	hire/supervise additional staff and consultants that may be needed
for NCL purposes;
*	organize logistics for membership and board meetings;
*	work with the Board and its various committees to develop,
institutionalize, and centralize membership, financial, personnel, and
administrative processes and procedures for the Coalition;
*	attend quarterly board and membership meetings and monthly
conference calls of the board and public policy committee;
*	function as the point person for the board, NCL's various
committees, and its President, with whom a close day-to-day relationship is
expected;  
*	draft press releases and written public information (for board
review), including material for the NCL web site.

Qualifications:  
*	Demonstrated expertise in fund development and fund raising
*	Excellent writing skills and oral communication skills
*	Experience in nonprofit organization building, budget management,
and program implementation
*	Good interpersonal skills, discretion and sense of politic,
initiative, ability to work autonomously, and eagerness to go the extra mile
for the good of the Coalition
*	Knowledge of the adult literacy system highly desirable but not
necessarily required

Compensation and terms of employment:  The appointment will be effective for
a six- to seven-month period beginning September 15, 2004.   The Interim
Director is expected to work an average of two days per week (at $400 per
day) for a total compensation of $25,000.

interest and why they feel they are the ideal candidate for the job, as well
