We need to invest in some new TABE materials. What do you folks suggest? Should we go with the newest-9 & 10? Or should we order more 7 & 8? I am not familiar with the TABE much at all. Has 9 & 10 been aligned with NRS standards? Do the scaled scores from 9 & 10 correspond to forms 7 & 8 so you get NRS-reportable results? What would you recommend that an adult literacy community-based organization get? Do we have to get the complete battery or will the survey do? As you can see, I need lots of help! Thanks in advance. ******************** Cindi Riley Assistant Director Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry 1403 Prince St. Beaufort, SC 29902 phone 843-525-6658 fax 843-521-1945 criley@lowcountryliteracy.org www.lowcountryliteracy.org -----Original Message----- From: nifl-fobasics@nifl.gov [mailto:nifl-fobasics@nifl.gov]On Behalf Of Sue Pierson Sent: Monday, August 02, 2004 10:11 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-FOBASICS:1091] FW: RE: Help With Curriculum. Dr. Rosen, As an External Diploma Program trainer for Connecticut, I would like to respond to the comments about EDP. The External Diploma Program should be considered as an alternative to the GED or Credit Diploma. Since the EDP is an appropriate program for the mature adult who is self-motivated, self-directed and the program is non-instructional, it should not be confused with being for someone who is not ready for GED. Please understand that it is not easier: it is different. A person taking the GED could pass by getting about half the answers correct and not have to get any Algebra answers right. In EDP, all 65 competencies must be demonstrated 100%. EDP works well for the person who cannot or does not want to attend classes. It works well for someone who has test anxiety or needs more time to take a test. We have found that more and more ESL students are successful in getting their high school diploma through EDP because of the time factor involved in taking the GED test. Dr. Rosen, in addition to the excellent references from David and others (re: EFF, etc), I'm wondering if anyone sees the External Diploma Program as a viable alternative for folks who are not yet ready for the GED, and/or for whom the GED might not even be a useful credential?
