Hello,

We are offering a few short elective courses this fall in our basic
literacy program. They will meet for 5 weeks, once a week for 1/12-2
hrs. They are intended to complement our regular small group tutoring
sessions which we offer twice a week and the computer assisted
instruction through our computer lab.

Those who would sign up for the pre-GED course are in the 220-230 range
on the CASAS. Generally, they're not quite ready for the GED prep
courses at the ABE center, but they're at the top range of our program,
and are up for a challenge.

We will also be offering separate electives on math and writing, so my
inclination is to have them sample some of the materials they would
encounter on the social studies, science, and English grammar sections
of the GED test, as well as to administer a GED pre-test.

What I am thinking of is something along the following:

Session I Presentation and Q & A by a rep from our city's GED program
Session II Administer the exam
Session III Selective Passages on the social studies exam
Session IV Selective passages from the language arts section

At this stage I feel that all we can do is to provide a solid
introduction to the GED exam with the realization that there may be much
additional work required. With sufficient numbers of students available
for a pre-GED course we will be in a better position to offer one either
this spring or next fall.

We do sense there is a need to serve the more advanced students more
effectively and to provide transitional resources for more advanced work
whether preparing for the GED or job training.

Comments/suggestions/ questions welcome.
