Hi colleagues.
I was reading an article this afternoon about negative coping
habits of ABE readers and was stunned to see that the first issue mentioned
was cheating.

I've never seen that in adult programs I've worked with and
wonder if I've been living in a cave. This particular program is a mandatory
program, so I suspect that has something to do with the problem. The author
wrote about students cheating on the TABE to escalate their evaluation scores
for placement, copying from other student's papers and a couple of others
that I see as plausible coping mechanisms of low-literacy readers. But cheating?

I wanted to throw that out to the list and see if you have found that to
be an issue in your programs.

The citation is Stanfel, J.E., Strategies
to overcome negative reading habits of ABE participants: A case study. Adult
Basic Education. 6:3 p165, 16p Fall 1996

Thoughts?
