Students are told they advance to the next level class if they score above 5.0 in reading and math. This is a statewide criterion. Advancement means points toward early release. Lack of progress can negatively affect parole. Most of my students are incarcerated for drug or alcohol abuse. For many of these men cheating is just what you do. I don't mean to imply the same is true for your students, but adults have various mechanisms for coping with the world. Cheating, for some students, is like a wheelchair ramp - a necessary and reasonable accommodation that helps them overcome the need for learning. I don't believe this is a self esteem issue but an exhibition of learned behavior.
