<< Dear folks,

Is it only me -- or does anyone else feel that games like health Bingo are
demeaning to use with a lot of "seniors."

Yeah, yeah...I know that many "seniors" play Bingo, but geeeeeze...

Would anyone like to discuss this sensitive issue?

One of my big complaints about "health educators" is that they're always
reducing everything down to third-grade level -- whether they need to or not.
Most health promotion materials for adults look like they belong on
elementary school bulletin boards!

I just saw the movie "10" again. There is a classic scene with a dental
hygienist telling Dudley Moore in a singsongy voice, "Naughty, naughty,
naughty! Brushy, brushy, brushy! We know that we should brushy brushy,
don't we?"

Thanks in advance for the discussion.

Actually, before I became a nurse/now nurse practitioner and health educator,
I would have thought the same thing. But guess what!? I saw how much both
college students and a group of seniors enjoyed boring review of rather dry
material turned into something fun and interactive, with prizes too! Who
doesn't like prizes! I think a lot of what makes something like this work
lies in how you present it. These folks I'm developing this game for have a
great relationship with me, and I am very respectful of them and not at all
patronizing, so I'm sure the game idea will go over very well. They will
take it in the spirit in which it is intended, and we'll all have a great
time. I think I'm gonna try Jeopardy this time, and personally, I'm looking
forward to playing Alex Trebec! Thanks for helping us think about this sort
of thing consciously though!
