Dear Mavis,

I have recently proposed to my Health Department's management that we participate in our community's "Chalk Art Festival". Each of our divisions (Environmental Health, Community Health and Wellness and Human Services) will be given a 2 meter by 2 meter space on the down town sidewalk, chalk and will draw/advocate some public health message. Most participants are amateur and professional artist individuals.

There is also "Plays for Living" which utilizes community volunteer actors to do vignettes on various social/health concerns and then does a discussion with the audience. It's a national organization in the States.

There is also bibliotherapy. Using various books and poetry-I prefer to use the classics- as a starting point to discuss health/social concerns of the group. We used "Romeo and Juliette" to talk about mature relationships, violence and infatuation. "Les Miserables" for Peace and Justice issues. "To Kill a Mockingbird" , "Huckleberry Finn" and "Flowers for Algernon" for prejudice and bigotry issues. etc.

Regards,
Pamela Wild
