Dear Deborah, Congratulations on your Mission Health Lit project!  I am 
looking forward to your website.

As to your diabetes/confidentiality dilemma,I'm not sure that we know enough 
about what the debate is?  Does your staff feel that the confidentiality of 
the learners or the tutors is at risk?

Perhaps there would be less of an issue of confidentiality and consent if you 
re-designed your outreach to our tutors and tutees.
Do you have meetings where a bunch of your tutors get together?  If so, 
perhaps the medical student could explain her project at such a meeting, so 
as to save some time and labor.  Also, calling people out of the blue at home 
can put some people off.

As for tutors finding out whether or not their learner(s) have diabetes, 
perhaps the tutors could tell their learners about the diabetes packet 
project, framing it in the context of a medical student needing input from 
the people who would most likely use it.  Then the tutor could ask if the 
learner knows anyone with diabetes who might be interested in looking at the 
materials.  This way the learner can divulge their own condition if they 
want, or they might have a family member who might want to be involved.  

My experience in adult education is that students are more than willing to 
talk about health issues with which they are familiar.  I don't think that 
they would consider such a project or inquiry such an invasion of privacy.  
And they are not obliged to participate.  

Perhaps I am being too simplistic?  I wonder if the medical student might 
want to actually see how people engage with her packet, as this will let her 
know much more about its effectiveness?
