Does anyone know the original source of the often cited 6th grade standard
for public health education materials? It's not from APHA. I would
especially like to know if the standard is based primarily on clinical
experience (not unreasonable) or also on specific, cite-able public health
research data?

Although the Canadian Public Health Association has been an active health
literacy advocate for a long time, I can find no evidence that APHA has
addressed this issue at all. However, Mohammed Akhter (APHA pres.) did
attend the most recent Pfizer health literacy conference in DC so I explored
the issue w/ him.

I am now drafting a resolution on health literacy to submit to APHA at the
November meetings in Boston. I must submit a first draft by March 3, but
can continue to revise and add sponsors. Of those of you who are APHA
members, is there anyone who would like to co-author/co-sponsor the
resolution, as an individual or representing a section? The more of us, the
better.

If so, please contact me at lspotter@att.net (NOT via the NIFL listserve).

Thanks very much,
Linda
