Perhaps this cost estimate came from a paper presented by Robert B.
Friedland, Director of the National Academy on an Aging Society in
Washington, DC, at Pfizer's Conference on Health Literacy in 1998. The
paper is titled "Understanding Health Literacy: New Estimates of the Costs
of Inadequate Health Literacy". In collaboration with the Center for Health
Care Strategies, Inc., the Academy also produced a fact sheet summarizing
the results of this paper. Gregory O'Neill and other Academy staff are
currently updating these cost estimates. An updated version of the paper is
expected in Summer 2000.

If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of the paper or the fact sheet,
please contact Andrea Adams by email at aadams@agingsociety.org
<mailto:aadams@agingsociety.org> or by telephone at (202) 408-3375. The
fact sheet can also be downloaded from the Academy's web site at
www.agingsociety.org <http://www.agingsociety.org> under "Publications".

Kristen: Thanks for an extremely useful reference. You can bet we will be
distributing copies of the fact sheet everywhere the Mid-Carolina Health
Literacy Network goes. One question: Does the larger paper detail how
these figures were derived?
