Dear Drue,

I would recommend that you refer to the book Birth in Four Cultures by
anthropologist Brigette Jordan (1993). Much of her book is about working
with Mayan women in the Yucatan around family planning/birthing issues. She
shares some great insights related to educating these women about these
issues - mainly what not to do. She recommends staying away from a
pedagogical stance and focus on how to involve the women as the "experts".
Primarily because they have been the educators and the family planners in
their communities for years.

Good luck,
Mondi Mason
