Update on Health Literacy Month
September 19, 2000

To all,

October is Health Literacy Month. Many of you have shared your plans to
raise awareness about the need for understandable health information. Many
more of you have asked for suggestions of things to do.

Here are a few ideas that don't require much time or money:
* Download the facts - visit the Health Literacy Toolbox Web site at:
http://www.prenataled.com/healthlit/default.asp
* Talk with your patients - find out what they find hard to understand, and
why
* Create a lobby/cafeteria display about health literacy
* Write an article about health literacy for your in-house newsletter
* Add health literacy to the agenda at your next department meeting
* Pose a question about health literacy each day of the month
* Introduce yourself to other health literacy advocates in your local area

I plan to continue supporting Health Literacy Month by leading TeleClasses.
These TeleClasses are a wonderful forum for health literacy advocates from
the US and Canada to "meet" each other and share ideas. One of these,
"Health Literacy Month: What's Working, What Isn't, and Why" is designed
specifically for you to talk candidly about your experiences with our
first-ever Health Literacy Month.

To find out about these and other Health Literacy Consulting TeleClasses,
click on the URL beneath each class listed below, go to
www.healthliteracy.com and click on TeleClasses, or contact me directly at
Helen@healthliteracy.com. Please also let me know if you would like to
receive periodic e-mail announcements of upcoming TeleClasses.

Happy planning for Health Literacy Month,

Helen Osborne, MEd., OTR/L
