What suggestions do you have for people who want to be literacy volunteers?
Where do you suggest they go for more information, and what type of a
 commitment is involved? >>

Literacy programs need volunteers constantly to fill many needs, from serving
on boards and comittees to fundraising, publicity, and special event
organizing. In our program, those who wish to directly tutor adults in
reading and writing complete 12 hours of training and commit to three hours
per week, dividing the time into two 1 1/2 hour tutoring sessions. Most work
with individuals, some with groups of learners, some in computer labs. Two
national websites to check to connect with local programs are
literacyvolunteers.org (which is Literacy Volunteers of America) and
laubach.org, (which is Laubach Literacy). Both have local chapters
throughout the country. Or start where you are. Find out if your adult
education system is delivered through community colleges, or local school
districts, or even the employment office. Also, anyone who wishes may email
me at dwyoho@aol.com, and I will check a national directory I have.
