Just checking in;;;;;

We offered our health literacy materials to 23 consumers on 10/25 at a local drop in center.

These materials included books of information which I have collected exploring health issues while providing more basic reading levels, more interactive tools and recipes and shopping lists for Healthy food choices. These materials are still under development as I am making table of contents, color coding reading levels, etc.The materials I have currently collected include: Mental Health, Issues of the Heart, Women's Health, Men's Health, Arthritis, Food Safety, Nutrition and Recipes, Weight Loss,
Astma and Allergies, and Diabetes. I am working on one which includes:
Headaches, Pain Management and Alternative Treatments.

The materials were well received with everyone finding at least one book of interest to them. We used an Open Learning approach which worked very well allowing us to work with two groups of consumers while giving eveyone the time they wanted to at least explore 1-2 books.

Ideas included:
Heart- How's your ticker?
Diabetes-Are you too sweet?
Artritis-Those Aching Bones.

While we were not able to have materials (pamphlets) ready for consumers to assist in assesing readability issues, we did ask consumers to bebin to think of some good names for these materials.

We plan to have these discussions continue in different group settings
and with individuals continue. We have been invited to do some presentations to other staff regarding this collection of resources and how to go about collecting this type of information.

he primary search engine I have been using has been NOAH. Some of these topics address a variety of topics at a good reading level. Much of the information uses either a question and answer approach or a informative tips apprach. I have enjoyed researching the various topics and hope to use it professionally in the future.

I have appretiated the opportunity to share with others the opportunity to share our varied ideas and approaches.

Look forward to continuing to work with you..
Kathyann
