The program, as I'm sure most of you know, trains pediatric healthcare providers to encourage parents, during each well-child checkup (starting at 6 months) to read aloud to their young children. In the context of advice and guidance they offer to parents about raising healthy children, they educate parents on the abilities and needs of their children at different ages, and give them age-specific advice on ways that they can encourage in them a love of reading. Children also get free books at every check-up. The ROR National Center at Boston Medical Center, Boston University School of Medicine, offers grants to healthcare facilities interested in implementing the program, and as I said, training to providers. Many of our 900 sites across the country have developed partnerships with family literacy programs to work with parents of these kids to improve their own reading skills. The ROR National Center is, in fact, piloting such collaboration with NCFL in several cities. I would encourage anyone interested in linking up with a ROR site to visit our website (www.reachoutandread.org) to see if there is one in your community - and if so, to contact me, and I'll complete the connection. Thanks!
