Celine, it is my experience that literacy programs often avoid working with
substance abuse folks--some programs have policies, as we do, that if a
person is referred from a counseling or treatment center they must be clear
of drugs 6 months before we will enroll them. In our case, we work with
volunteer tutors, and the risks involved if someone comes to a session drunk
or high are too great for us to take on. We found this out when we began
getting referrals from the court; people who had to do community service
would call us to volunteer as tutors. We discovered that most were DUI cases
and had active drinking problems. So we don't take referrals of volunteers
from that program any more. Of course, working with patients, whether they
be learners or tutors, in a residential program is a different situation,
since the enrironment is controlled. We have had success, and do work with,
persons in transitinoal housing who have completed a treatment program and
are well into recovery, when remaning sober and clear of drugs is required in
order for them to be there. As for research, I am as curious as you. Let's
hear from other listers ona this topic. Thaks for posing it. Debbie
