Kathy,

According to every text I've used to teaching reading methods, SMOG is
the acronym for

Simple Measure of Gobbledeguk

Honest! Used mostly for a level of recreational reading. developed by G.
Harry McLaughlin in 1969 for RAPIDLY estimating the readability of
middle-grade materials. Now hang on - how rapidly can you count 10
consecutive sentences near the beginning, the middle and the end of a
passage. Now take all 30 sentences and count every word of three are
more syllables. Okay, now flash think fast - and calculate and "estimate
the square root of the number of polysyllabic words counted. This is
done by taking the the square root of the nearest perfect square. Add
three to the approximate square root. This gives the SMOG grade.

Things were different during the Summer of '69 ; - )
