Working in a hospital, I see the double-edged sword of using JCAHO standards as
leverage. The standards are appropriate and can serve as a wonderful guide and
template for what your pt ed program needs to consider. HOWEVER, when JCAHO
only comes to visit every few years, and the focus on meeting the standards is
only there in the months before JCAHO visits, staff can become very cynical
about 'meeting JCAHO standards'. It could be very effective if hospitals really
made the commitment to continuously meet JCAHO standards.

What do listers think about whether it is reasonable to cite JCAHO standards
as one of many good reasons to promote heath literacy/plain language concepts
and programs? I am wondering if this may offer some leverage when
opportunities arise to encourage commitment to our cause? Thanks, Debbie
