GETTING LESS CARE - New Families USA report shows big health care
gaps between uninsured and insured with common chronic health
problems. Compared to their insured counterparts,uninsured people
with chronic health conditions receive half the number of lab tests;
are much more likely to go without essential medicines; obtain far
fewer screenings; make 19 to 28% fewer visits to outpatient settings;
and are three to four and one-half times as likely to have been
unable to obtain care due to affordability problems.

FOOD STAMP LEAVERS IN ILLINOIS: How They Are Doing Two Years Later -
New study from Mathematica is one of the few to examine the status of
this diverse group. About half of those who exited in 1997 were
employed two years later, while more than half had incomes below the
poverty line. Researchers found food insecurity with hunger evident
among one-fourth of the leavers. Those who left the program because
of sanctions experienced severe and multiple hardships. The findings,
which mirror those of a similar study of food stamp leavers in
Phoenix, Arizona, point to national concerns about food stamp leavers.
