SAM stands for Suitability Assessment of Materials. It is materials assessment tool developed by Leonard and
Cecilia Doak and Jane Root and can be found in their book "Teaching Patients with Low Literacy Skills."- Second
Edition. The tool provides a checklist with specific criteria for rating materials as superior, adequate or not
suitable in six different areas: content, literacy demand, graphics, layout and typography, learning stimulation
and motivation and cultural appropriateness. It is excellent and very useful for looking at elements that go
beyond straight readabilty calculations.

We are currently using it in a project to review informed consent statements.
