Dear Rochelle and others on the net,

SAM (Suitability Assessment of Materials) is a 22 factor instrument to
evaluate the suitability of health care materials for patients and the
public. It was developed by Len and Ceci Doak in 1993, and received a measure
of validation he following year.

The 22 factors are in 6 groups:

- Content
- Literacy demand
- Graphics
- Layout and typography
- Learning stimulation and motivation
- Cultural appropriateness

SAM is described in ch. 4 of Doak, Doak, Root. Teaching patients with low
literacy skills, 2 nd Ed. JB Lippincott. 1996.

Len and Ceci Doak
